Trekking in Ladakh from Rumtse to Tso Moriri

A journey into the extraordinary scenery of Ladakh with medium difficulty trekking even if carried out at high altitudes. An experience made unique by the encounter of the traditional life of the yak breeders who inhabit the Changthang plateau and landscapes of rare beauty such as the contexts of Lake Tso Kar and Lake Tsomoriri, framed by mountains over 6000 meters high. The trekking route is to be considered of a moderate / challenging level.

Day 01: Arrive in Delhi

Upon arrival at the airport in Delhi, meeting with our staff for presentations. Later transfer to the hotel. Continuation to New Delhi to the government buildings district with a stop at India Gate, the arch erected in memory of Indian soldiers. Visit of the Qutub Minar complex, a 73 meters high tower, engraved with verses from the Koran, built in 1193 by Qutab-ud-din Aibak, which is one of the most beautiful monuments in India. At the end visit the Sikh Temple, the most important Sikh place of worship in Delhi. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 02: Delhi / Leh (by flight)

In the morning flight to Leh, capital of Ladakh, at 3,400 meters above sea level, which requires a day of rest to acclimatize. In the afternoon, view of Shanti Stupa and Leh Palace and walk in the center of Leh. Full board.

 

Day 03: Leh

After breakfast, visit the Hemis Tibetan-Buddhist monastery which already existed before the 11th century and is still revered today as the largest monastic institution in Ladakh. It is famous for its rich collection of ancient texts, the Buddha statue, the gold and silver stupa. Then, visit the Thiksey monastery, on the top of a hill, at an altitude of 3600 meters, about 11 km. from Leh and that so much resembles the Potala of Lhasa. Then, through a series of chortens, you reach the Shey Palace, the former summer palace of the King of Ladakh. Full board.

Day 04: Leh / Hemis / Rumtse (4160 m.)

Breakfast and departure for Rumtse with a stop to visit Hemis, the largest monastery in Ladakh. Founded by King Singe Namgyal in 1627 and to this day it is one of the most important Buddhist institution in the region. In addition to the largest thangka in the world and the bronze statue of the Buddha dating from the 12th century, a large collection of gold statues, stupas and relics set with precious stones are preserved here. We continue our journey along the main road stopping in Upshi for lunch. After passing through several remote villages, we will then arrive at the village of Rumtse. Dinner and overnight in a tent. Full board.

Day 05: Rumtse / Kyamar (4383 m.) 4-5 hrs.

After breakfast the trek begins with a walk along the road and then take the path that leads to a river that flows from the right side and which we will cross to continue on foot up to a stream, which must also be crossed. After passing areas where the valley widens and narrows you come to a point where you turn north to a campsite near a local nomad settlement living in traditional tents. Dinner and overnight in a tent. Full board.

Day 06: Kyamar to Tisaling (4800 m.) via Kyumur La (4870 m.) & Mandalchan La (4996 m.) 5-6 hrs.

Breakfast and departure for a new trekking route. After a few minutes' walk from the campsite, an easy but long climb to the Kyumur Pass begins. The strenuous climb is alleviated by the beauty of the colorful wildflowers found along the path that heads upwards where the path splits in two; one goes towards the Tsokar lake and one, on the right, leads to a stream, crossing which there is another ascent towards another passage that leads to the top of the Mandalchan Pass (4996 m.). The route climbs and then descends steeply down to the beautiful Tisaling valley, where the campsite is located. Dinner and overnight in a tented camp. Full board.

Day 07: Tisaling to Pangunagu (Tsokar) (4398 m.) via Shingbuk La (5016 m.) 5-6 hrs.

Breakfast and start of the trek. A gradual and easy climb will take you to Shibuk La. From the top you can get a first view of Tsokar Lake. Then we proceed for a long descent towards Pangunagu where many wild asses (kyang) can be seen. In Pangunagu we will stay overnight. Dinner and overnight in a tented camp. Full board.

Day 08: Pangunagu to Nuruchan (4500 m.) 4-5 hrs.

Breakfast and departure for the trek which begins with an easy walk along Tsokar Lake for about 2 hours and then along a track in a sandy plain. You will come to agricultural fields where the campsite is located next to a stream. Dinner and overnight in a tented camp. Full board.

 

Day 09: Nuruchan to Rachungkaru (4668 m.) via Horlam Kongka La (4712 m.) 3-4 hrs.

Breakfast and start of a short trek that begins early in the morning crossing a river and continues up to the Horlam kongka Pass (4712 m.); then continue with a slow descent to the stream. Cross the stream and follow the path on the right side of the stream to reach Rjungkaru. Dinner and overnight in a tented camp. Full board.

Day 10: Rachungkaru to Gyama-Lhoma (4895 m.) 6-7 hrs.

Breakfast and start of the trek along a path that, in about 2 hours, climbs to the Kyamayur Pass (5125 m.). The last bit of the climb is quite tiring. After the pass the path leads to the north-east and, further on, it climbs towards the Gyama Pass (5100 m.), Where you can enjoy a panoramic view of different peaks. Then walk north-east and cross the small river to Gyama-Lhoma, after another river which is also a starting point for the Korzok Pass. Dinner and overnight in a tented camp. Full board.

Day 11: Gyama-Lhoma to Korzok (Tsomoriri Lago)

Breakfast and departure for a new route that begins with an easy climb to the Korzok Pass, along a stream. In about 2 hours you reach the top which offers a splendid view of Lake Tsomoriri, after which a steep walk begins to the village Korzok. Dinner and overnight in a tented camp. Full board.

 

Day 12: Tsomoriri a Leh (240 km. - 6 hrs)

Breakfast and walk around the lake and then leave for Leh via Mahey Bridge and Chumathang, a famous hot spring known for its medicinal properties. Dinner and overnight at the hotel. Full board.

Day 13: Leh / Delhi (by flight)

Transfer to the airport. Flight to Delhi. In the afternoon, tour in Old Delhi, visit from outside the Red Fort. Visit the Jama Masjid, one of the most impressive Indian mosques, and the Raj Ghat, a black marble platform that marks the cremation site of Mahatma Gandhi. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 14: Depart from Delhi

Breakfast and transfer to the airport for boarding the flight to Italy.
